Hoy fue nuestro taller de ciencia en donde íbamos a hacer ¡aerodeslizadores!

David, uno de los voluntarios ingleses fue el instructor y nos mostró a todos qué hacer bajo la supervisión de Miss Lucy. Ya había hecho uno en casa.

Dijeron que debíamos traer una botella de plástico, una que tiene el tapón móvíl como el de gatorade mostrado en la imagen siguiente.

Hovercraft

Today was our science workshop and we were going to make hovercrafts!

David, one of the English volunteers was the instructor, and showed us all what to do under Miss Lucy’s supervision. He had already made one at home.

We were all told to bring a plastic bottle with us today. The ones with a pull-up spout top like the gatorade ones in the picture below.

Primero tuvimos que cortar un círculo de un trozo de cartón y pegarlo en la tapa. Esto ralentiza el flujo de aire permitiendo al aerodeslizador deslizarse durante más tiempo. Luego usamos la pistola de pegamento caliente para pegar la tapa en el centro del CD. Era importante crear un sello hermético para evitar que se escapara el aire.

First we had to cut out a circle from a piece of cardboard and glue it in the lid. This slows down the flow of air allowing the hovercraft to hover longer. We then used the hot glue gun to glue the lid to the centre of the CD. It was important to create a good seal to stop the air from escaping.

Luego inflamos el globo pellizcando el cuello en lugar de anudarlo, asegurándonos de que la tapa estuviera cerrada y colocamos el cuello del globo sobre la parte emergente de la tapa. Esto fue más fácil ayundándonos entre dos de nosotros.

We then blew the balloon up pinching the neck rather than tieing it in a knot.
Making sure the pop-top was closed, we then fitted the neck of the balloon over the pop-up bit of the lid. This was easier between two of us.

Eso fue todo, listos para empezar a deslizar! Simplemente hay que poner el aerodeslizador sobre una superficie lisa y abrir la tapa para que saliese el aire.

Ready to start hovering! You simply put the craft on a smooth surface and pop the top open.

¿Cómo funcionan los aerodeslizadores?

El flujo de aire creado por el globo provoca un cojín de aire en movimiento entre el disco y la superficie. Esto levanta el CD y reduce la fricción que permite que el disco flote libremente. Los aerodeslizadores a gran escala son capaces de viajar por tierra, agua y nieve.

Haz un experimento de ello.

¿Para que sea un verdadero experimento, puede intentar responder a estas preguntas:

1. ¿El tamaño del globo afecta la capacidad de CDs para flotar?

2. ¿Funcionaría mejor un globo llenado de aire o de helio?

3. ¿Los discos más grandes hacen mejores aerodeslizadores (platos de plástico de picnic, viejos discos de vinilo, etc…)?

How do hovercrafts work?

The air flow created by the balloon causes a cushion of moving air between the disc and the surface. This lifts the CD and reduces the friction which allows the disc to hover freely. Large scale hovercraft are capable of travelling over land, snow and water.

Make it an experiment.

To make it a true experiment, you can try to answer these questions:

1. Does the size of the balloon affect the CDs ability to hover?

2. Does a helium balloon work better than an air filled balloon?

3. Do larger discs make better hovercrafts (plastic picnic plates, old record albums)?
